Fypon Faux Beams vs. Real Wood Beams: The Comparison That Changed How I Buy

  • It's a historical restoration where original materials matter
  • Rustic rough-sawn character variation is the design intent
  • There's a maintenance budget for refinishing cycles

In our current commercial work, about 8 out of 10 jobs spec Fypon. Not because wood is bad. Because cost, consistency, and maintenance lean that way.

The Assumption Worth Questioning

There's a tendency to equate "natural" with "superior." That's a simplification. People assume expensive things are better. Actually, products that solve problems better can charge more—the causation runs the other direction.

Wood isn't automatically the premium choice because it's natural. The application determines the right material.

The best purchasing lesson I've learned is simple: ask what's not included in the number you're looking at. If a supplier can't or won't itemize the full cost, that's an answer in itself.

Get the full installed price. Compare apples to apples. And don't let assumptions about "natural" override the math.
