So which one should you choose?
Let's get the obvious out of the way first: I'm not here to tell you that Fypon is better than wood in every situation. In my role as a procurement manager for a mid-sized renovation company, I've learned that 'better' depends on who's paying, how long they plan to stay, and what the installer is actually good at. I've compared a lot of line items, and trim is one of those things where the lowest number on the material list can be the most expensive choice after you factor in labor and callbacks.
So this is a comparison between Fypon PVC trim and Fypon faux beams and traditional site-built wood trim. The numbers below are real regional quotes from early 2025, so please verify current pricing before you budget.

It's tempting to compare the material price per linear foot and call it done. That's exactly the mistake I made on my first trim bid. I looked at the Fypon number, looked at the pine number, and nearly wrote off Fypon as 'premium plastic.'
Then I added the labor and maintenance columns. That changed everything.
The fair comparison isn't Fypon vs. a pine board. It's installed, finished, and maintained Fypon vs. installed, finished, and maintained wood. Those are two very different cost curves.
For this breakdown, I'm using a typical project: about 180 linear feet of window and door trim plus three 8-ft Fypon faux beams in a vaulted ceiling.
Dimension 1: Upfront material cost
Let's start with what everyone wants to see: sticker price.
- Wood trim: We were quoted $1.20 to $3.00 per linear foot for finger-jointed pine. Clear cedar ran $3.20 to $5.00 per linear foot depending on the profile. For 180 linear feet, that's about $450 to $700 for pine and $650 to $900 for cedar (local lumberyard quotes, February 2025).
- Fypon trim: Common PVC crown and casing profiles landed around $2.50 to $5.50 per linear foot, and deep cornice profiles went higher. The same 180 linear feet ran about $550 to $950 (manufacturer list prices and online distributor quotes, early 2025).
- Fypon faux beams: The 8-ft beams we priced were $200 to $350 each. A real rough-sawn cedar beam of similar visual size was $120 to $220 at the yard, but it needed sealing, staining, and structural connection details.
On raw material, wood wins. I'm not going to pretend otherwise. But if you stop there, you're missing the part where most of the money actually goes.
There's also a hidden difference in what you're buying. A wood trim board is a raw material. Fypon trim is a finished profile with factory-primed surfaces and consistent dimensions. You're not comparing apples to apples; you're comparing a component to a system.
Dimension 2: Installed cost and the trades around it
Material is maybe 35 to 40 percent of the total cost in a trim job. Labor is the bigger number. I don't trust national averages for labor, so here's what our subcontractors actually billed.
For wood, the carpenter had to cut, fit, nail, fill nail holes, and coordinate with a painter for priming and two coats. That painter visit on a 180-ft project ran $700 to $1,000 and added about four days to the schedule.
For Fypon, the material cost more, but the same carpenter could install it and skip the full paint walk-through when we ordered primed profiles. Some profiles still needed painted caulk or touch-up, but not the whole prime-and-paint cycle. The labor was slightly slower at first—PVC trim needs expansion gaps, compatible adhesives, and mechanical fasteners according to Fypon's published installation guide—but we saved almost all of the painting time.
Dodged a bullet on one project when I read that installation guide before letting a crew fasten a Fypon faux beam directly against a wood mantle. The expansion requirements are real, and ignoring them turns a low-maintenance product into a cracked one.
Here's the catch that doesn't show up in the quote: the surrounding trades. A door casing is not the same job as a door hinge. If your carpenter is installing Fypon trim around an existing door, don't assume they're also the person to fix a binding hinge or adjust the strike plate. That's hardware work, and it needs a different skill set and sometimes a different order.
The same logic applies to a shower niche. That's tile, waterproofing, and framing—not a trim accessory. Fypon makes handsome interior accents, but if someone tries to sell you a PVC shower niche from a trim company, that should raise a flag.
Bottom line on installed cost: Fypon was roughly 5 to 10 percent higher than pine on day one, and actually a little lower than clear cedar once painting and callbacks were included.
Dimension 3: Total cost of ownership (the number that actually matters)
This is the dimension that usually surprises people. On the internet, you can search how to turn off liquid glass and get results that have nothing to do with why you asked. Mismatched questions happen all the time. In my cost tracking system, I care less about the first-year cost than the five-year and ten-year cost.
Here's a quick TCO projection from our project data:
- Pine trim cost about $1,600 installed. In year three, the south-facing porch trim had cracked and faded, so we repainted: $650. In year seven, a corner board rotted where a gutter joint had been dripping on it: $400 to replace the section plus priming and painting.
- Fypon trim cost about $1,750 installed. Year three: zero. Year seven: zero. We rinsed it with a hose.
I'm not saying PVC can't fail. Fypon's own guidelines call for expansion joints, and if you nail it tight in cold weather, you can create problems. But the maintenance cycle for painted exterior trim is generically better.
The honest rule of thumb I use: if you plan to own the property less than five years, wood can be the lean option. If you plan to stay seven or more, the PVC product almost always wins on total cost—even when it loses on the initial quote.

Dimension 4: Aesthetics and knowing where Fypon shouldn't be used
Let me be straightforward: Fypon faux beams look good, but they don't look exactly like actual rough-sawn beams when you put them side by side. The texture is convincing from a distance, the details are sharp, and they're light enough for a two-person crew. But if your client wants the honest patina of wood grain and paint that develops over time, a synthetic beam won't give them that story.
On the other hand, wood gives you that story plus maintenance. There's no free lunch.
Honestly, the decision isn't only about dollars. For my own porch columns, I went back and forth between Fypon and clear cedar for two weeks. Fypon offered a no-paint-maintenance path; cedar had the warmth I wanted. Ultimately, I chose Fypon because I knew I wouldn't repaint that porch for a decade. That's a personal choice, not a universal one.
Where I push back is when a supplier or contractor starts selling Fypon as the answer to everything. That's the 'expertise has boundaries' principle, and I've learned to trust vendors who admit it. A trim specialist should say, 'I'll handle the columns and beams, but the shower niche is a tile-and-waterproofing job, and the swinging door hinge setback is a hardware guy's issue.'
There's also a classic out-of-scope moment: someone will search how to turn off liquid glass and land on a building product page because they don't know where else to go. That doesn't mean the building product company should start answering software or chemistry questions. It means the 'everything solution' mindset causes just as many problems as an underspecified bid.
So use Fypon where it belongs: interior or exterior decorative trim, porch columns, window surrounds, crown molding, dentil details, and faux beams. Don't use it for structural posts, continuously submerged areas, surfaces needing tight field curves, or anything where the installation guide says you need a different product.
So which one should you choose?
If you ask me, here's how I'd decide:
- Choose Fypon trim or Fypon faux beams if you want low-maintenance exterior details, if you're tired of painting every few years, if you need a deep cornice or dentil profile without paying a millworker, or if your construction schedule can't absorb a separate paint trip.
- Choose real wood if the design calls for natural stained grain, if it's a historic restoration with non-standard profiles, if the homeowner is willing to own the refinishing cycle, or if the property is likely to sell before the first repaint.
I'm not going to tell you that Fypon is 'always better.' That kind of absolute claim is exactly what makes contractors suspicious of product marketing. But I can tell you this: in my line of work, the highest-cost bid is rarely the one with the highest unit price. It's usually the one that ignored installation, maintenance, and the boundaries of the trades.
