How to Avoid Costly Spec Mistakes When Ordering Fypon PVC Trim

Who This Checklist Is For

If you're ordering Fypon decorative trim—gable brackets, window headers, porch columns, dentil molding—for the first time, or if you've had orders come back wrong, this is for you. I've been handling material orders for a mid-sized remodeling firm since 2019, and I've personally made (and documented) six significant ordering mistakes, totaling roughly $3,200 in wasted budget and redo labor. Now I maintain our team's pre-order checklist. This is that checklist.

Five steps. Do them in order. Skip one at your own risk.

Step 1: Measure the Actual Opening, Not the Rough-In

This sounds basic. It's the most common mistake I've seen—and made.

In my first year (2019), I ordered Fypon window headers for a Dutch door project based on the rough opening dimensions from the framing plan. The headers came in 4 inches too short. Why? The window unit itself had a nailing flange that reduced the visible opening. I hadn't accounted for that.

What to do: Measure the finished opening after the window or door is installed. For windows, measure from the outside edge of the jambs, not the frame. For gable brackets, measure the peak-to-plumb distance, not the eave-to-eave width.

Checkpoint: Write the measurement down. Then measure again. If the two numbers differ by more than 1/8 of an inch, measure a third time. (Should mention: this applies to all Fypon products, but especially window headers and door surrounds where millimetric accuracy matters for visual symmetry.)

Step 2: Confirm the Profile, Not Just the Product Name

Fypon offers multiple profiles for the same product category. A "gable bracket" isn't a single SKU. It's a category. There are ornate Victorian styles, clean modern lines, craftsman shapes—even within the same size range.

I once ordered 12 Fypon gable brackets for a row of townhouses. The product name was correct. The SKU was, I thought, correct. But I'd mixed up two similar-looking profiles—the dentil molding detail was different. They were installed on three houses before anyone noticed. That error cost $890 in replacement plus a 1-week delay while we waited for the right parts.

What to do: Pull the specific profile number from the Fypon catalog or website. Don't rely on verbal descriptions. Send the profile image to whoever's approving the order—architect, homeowner, whoever. Get a confirmation in writing.

Checkpoint: The written confirmation should match the product name and the profile number. If it says "gable bracket" without a profile number, that's not a confirmation—that's a future problem.

Step 3: Specify the Connection Method Before Ordering

This is the one most people overlook. Fypon trim doesn't just sit on the wall. It needs to be attached somehow. The connection method depends on what you're mounting it to—wood, brick, vinyl siding, or, I should add, a foam substrate for faux beams (think LVL or steel beam wraps).

I ordered 20 Fypon column wraps for a porch restoration in September 2022. They arrived perfectly. Then we realized they were designed for adhesive-only installation, but the client's brick columns needed mechanical fasteners. The adhesive wouldn't bond properly to the aged mortar. We ended up drilling through the wraps—damaging the finish—and using masonry anchors. The screws showed. The homeowner wasn't happy. We had to paint over them, which defeated the purpose of ordering pre-finished material.

If I could redo that decision, I'd have ordered the wraps with pre-drilled mounting holes or specified the fastener-compatible version. But given what I knew then—nothing about their column wrap attachment options—my choice was reasonable. Just wrong.

What to do: Before ordering, confirm: adhesive-only, mechanical fasteners, or combination? For adhesive, what type (construction adhesive, PL Premium, etc.)? For fasteners, what type of screws or clips does the Fypon product require? Does the substrate allow it?

Checkpoint: If you can't answer "how will this be attached" in one sentence, you're not ready to order.

Step 4: Specify the Finish—Primed or Pre-Finished

Fypon offers both primed-only (needs field painting) and pre-finished (color-coated at the factory) options. The price difference is significant: pre-finished can add 30-50% to the material cost, depending on the product. But the time savings on labor often justify it.

Never expected this to cause problems. Turns out, it does—because the finish affects how you handle the trim. Pre-finished requires careful handling to avoid scratching. If you scratch it, touching up the factory finish is tricky. Primed-only is more forgiving but requires an extra day of painting on-site.

The surprise wasn't the cost difference. It was how much hidden value came with pre-finished—consistency, no primer bleed-through, warranty protection. I went back and forth between primed and pre-finished for a high-end custom home project. The primed option offered cost savings of about $1,200 for the full order. But the pre-finished had the factory quality guarantee. Ultimately chose pre-finished because the client was paying for a premium look and any painting imperfections would have stood out.

What to do: Decide before ordering. If you're painting the trim yourself (or your crew is), order primed and budget for paint labor. If you want a factory-perfect finish and can handle shipping with care, order pre-finished.

Checkpoint: The finish specification should be in the order notes. If it's not, the default is usually primed-only—but verify with your supplier.

Step 5: Verify the Installation Sequence for Multi-Piece Assemblies

This one's for complex Fypon assemblies—things like door surrounds with multiple headers, or columns with capitals and bases. The order of installation matters. Some pieces overlap. Some need to be attached before others.

I ordered a Fypon door surround assembly for a Dutch door entryway in Q1 2024. The surround had a header, two pilasters, and a decorative keystone. I assumed the keystone glued onto the header after installation. Nope. The keystone was designed to slide into a groove on the header before the header was mounted. We figured this out when the keystone wouldn't fit. That's when I created our pre-check list.

What to do: Review the Fypon installation guide for the specific product before ordering. Note whether the assembly requires:

  • Pre-assembly on the ground before mounting
  • Sequential mounting (part A before part B)
  • Custom joining (trimming, caulking, or adhesive that's product-specific)

If the guide isn't clear, call Fypon support or your distributor. This gets into installation logistics territory, which isn't my expertise for every product. What I can tell you from a procurement perspective is: ask the question before the job site.

Checkpoint: If the installation requires more than one person to hold the assembly in place while it's being attached, verify the sequence now—not when the crew is on site.

Common Mistakes to Catch

Here's what we've caught using this checklist in the past 18 months—maybe 20 orders, give or take:

  • Wrong profile ordered for gable brackets (2 times, saved $560 in redo)
  • Measurement off by 1/2 inch on a window header (caught before order placed)
  • Finish not specified (defaulted to primed, but client expected pre-finished)
  • Connection method incompatible with substrate (brick vs. wood—saved a 3-day delay)
  • Installation sequence reversed on a door surround assembly

Five of the six caught errors would have resulted in re-orders. The checklist isn't perfect—I'm not a logistics expert, so I can't speak to carrier optimization or warehouse management. But from an ordering perspective, it's saved us time and money.

To be fair, even with the checklist, mistakes happen. The goal isn't zero errors—it's catching the expensive ones before they're installed.
