I Mocked PVC Trim Until a $3,200 Lesson. Now I Spec Fypon Balustrade Systems.

I used to make fun of PVC trim. Nothing personal—I just thought “real” builders worked with wood. Then I lost $3,200 on an order because I didn’t respect the material. That was 2019, and it changed how I run my crew. Today, I’m the one spec’ing Fypon balustrade systems and telling customers to ignore their old contractor’s anti-plastic bias.

The construction industry is evolving. The fundamentals haven’t changed—measuring right, planning for movement, honoring details—but the execution has transformed. What was best practice in the 2000s may not apply in 2025. And the faster you accept that, the fewer expensive surprises you’ll have.

I’m a residential builder handling porch and exterior renovations. In eight years, I’ve personally made and documented six significant ordering mistakes totaling roughly $7,400 in wasted budget. I now keep a checklist that has caught 47 potential errors. This article is the honest version of that checklist.

The Balustrade Wake-Up

“Wood is cheaper.” Sometimes the first cost is lower. But wood needs stripping, priming, and painting every few years. On a two-story porch, that’s a weekend plus a ladder plus a steady stream of swearing. PVC pays for itself the first time you skip that cycle.

“It’s not green.” That’s a real debate. But a product that lasts decades without chemical treatments or repainting has its own environmental story. Every builder has to weigh that one for themselves.

The Bottom Line

I’m not saying Fypon belongs on every project. If you’re restoring a historically certified house or matching real old-growth redwood, use the real thing. My experience is based on about 40 mid-sized residential projects with Fypon over five years. If you’re doing high-rise commercial or extreme-weather coastal work, the calculus might be different.

But for the average porch, addition, or exterior refresh, PVC decorative millwork has changed what “trim” can be. The industry is evolving—the old rules about measuring and sequence still stand, but the materials have caught up. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. And when you’re the one holding the tape measure, that’s a good thing.
